Disability

I will ensure that students have representation.

I’m an advocate for students with disabilities because I was a student with a disability. Today, I’m a young professional with a disability.

For as long as I could begin speaking, I’ve done so with a speech impediment. In the classroom, Pawtucket educators led me to academic and professional success.

When I was a student, I participated in programs like IEPs (Individualized Education Program) and AP (Advanced Placement) courses. I had access that allowed room to thrive.

My mission if serving on the Pawtucket School Committee, will be to make sure all students have the same opportunities I did, regardless of disability, race, gender, income status or sexuality.

DISABILITY ADVOCACY

AND ACTIVISM

I will spearhead efforts to increase communication, so parents are mindful of student's experiences in Pawtucket classrooms.

If elected to School Committee, I will serve as a voice for the voiceless and represent those who are underrepresented but are vital to the success of our schools.

I know what it’s like to overcome obstacles.

In Pawtucket, Department leaders and the School Committee have made valiant efforts to make capital improvements in our elementary, middle and high schools. These facilities will make lasting impressions on the landscape of Pawtucket as a city.

Potter Burns Elementary, the school which I attended for my first six grades, has been renovated and is unrecognizable with how many improvements it has gone through. Nathanael Greene Elementary is on its way to becoming new and improved as well.

The School Department and School Committee has made incredible efforts to keep these capital improvement projects rolling.

I want to make sure that the progress continues and helps the City as a whole along the way.

In the future, I want to dedicate my time to making sure that the corporations and development teams that we are using are Pawtucket-based businesses.

I want to make sure that we’re considering WMBEs (women and minority-owned business enterprise), and to invest in those that live and work here, to be part of these renovations.

After all, I want to set up our students to give back to the City that has given so much to me. I want to make sure that these students are receiving a quality education in quality facilities.

Civic

It’s difficult to turn on the news and avoid stories of Washington, D.C. Today, we have a nation divided in a time of moral crisis.

Women’s rights are now at risk, and the LGBT community and their peers are losing sleep over their future. Different cultures and religions throughout the nation are concerned that they can no longer enjoy themselves and practice prayer peacefully.

Here in Pawtucket, we’re a city of diversity and culture. Whether a family celebrates Irish culture every March, raises the red, white, blue and yellow flag to celebrate their Cape Verdean heritage every July 5th, or dines on Colombian arepas de queso how my parents and I do, we certainly know how to embrace each other in these trying and divided times.

While we watch things unfold, we adults take the repercussions of our actions and inactions for granted. I will be the first to admit that sometimes we can make decisions where we focus only on the short-term rather than the long-term - and that won't do for our children's future.

I’d like to increase efforts to see that students are taking part in Democracy. To learn civics and foundational rights and duties that are inherent to citizenship. High school students should be engaged and conscious of historical context of the changes in the world they live in, and be given a better chance to form good civic habits and remain a part of the process.

After all, these leaders of our future will be the ones we depend on to celebrate the cultures and qualities that unite us. Let’s make sure they have the resources and knowledge to do so!
